...The Spartan Way...

General Information

SHS Baseball Program Information

The Sumner Spartan Baseball Program in 2018 is following up on a WIAA 4A regional appearance, and their 7th WIAA state berth in the previous 8 seasons. These 8 seasons have seen many great teams including state semifinal appearance in 2012 and 2016 and state quarterfinal appearances in 2011 and 2014. The 2014 team finished the season with an overall record of 23-2, which represents a school record for wins and winning percentage. The 2014 team also won the SPSL 2A League Championship and WCDIII District Championship which was the first in school history.

SHS has seen 40 of it’s players move on to make college baseball rosters after their time as Spartans, including 2004 grad Nick Hagadone (MLB – Cleveland Indians, University of Washington) and 2005 grad Bryan Marquez (New Mexico State – 1st team NCAA SS).

DIAMOND SPORTS TRAINING CENTER (Our indoor practice home)

Address: 1217 13th St SE, Puyallup

What is that ‘V’ all about?

The ‘V’ stands for Valley. The athletes from Sumner High School represent a proud tradition of being from the valley. We take pride in who we are and where we are from. When you see a ‘V’ on a batting helmet, this means the individual player attended at least 75% of our winter training workouts. We on average have over 30 players from the baseball program attending these workouts.

C3 Award

The C3 Award is given to players who complete a packet of challenges prior to the season. Sumner Baseball values well rounded athletes, who want to make a difference on the field and in life. The three “C’s” stand for Character, Commitment and Community. The challenge consists of 10 character challenges, 10 hours of community service, and meeting a list of baseball preparation items. Players earn a T Shirt to commemorate their completion, and a helmet sticker to wear throughout the season.

Quality At Bat Award (top statistical player per team):

The Q award is Spartan Baseball’s way to recognize players who excel at our most valued offensive statistic; Quality At Bats. Quality At Bat percentage is tracked all season and “Q’s” are given to players for at bats that are focused on a more accurate formula of valuing an offensive player than the traditional method of tracking batting average.
